Welcome!

Troop 296 is part of the Steel City District in the Laurel Highlands Council, Boy Scouts of America.  Our chartering organization is St. Sylvester Roman Catholic Church located at 3754 Brownsville Road.

Our Troop

Troop 296 has a very rich history dating back to its founding charter in 1957.  We have been very successful because of excellent leadership and parental support.  Our meetings are held weekly in the Church Hall.

Our Activities

Our Troop participates in outdoor activities on a regular basis, such as hikes, bicycle rides, weekend campouts and camporees.  In July 2012, our Scouts will have the opportunity to spend their annual week-long summer camp at Heritage Reservation, the crown jewel of Boy Scout facilities in the Laurel Highlands Council and the Northeast Region of the United States.  Our Troop strives to work year-round on advancing through the Scouting ranks, earning merit badges, community service projects and fundraising actitvities.

Upcoming Activities

For our upcoming activites, please see the event calendar and announcements in the left hand column.

Medical Forms

The Boy Scouts of America recommends that all registered youth and adult members have annual medical evaluations by a certified and licensed health-care provider.  In an effort to provide better care to those who may become ill or injured, and to provide youth members and adult leaders a better understanding of their own physical capabilities, the BSA has established minimum standards for providing medical information prior to participating in various activities.

NOTE:  On January 1, 2010, the BSA National Council enacted a policy that this form must be updated by all participants every 12 months, regardless of age.

Our Mission

Troop 296 and its members have changed greatly since its formation in 1957, however our focus remains the same as in the beginning:

To serve others by helping to instill the values found in the Scout Oath and Law in the young men which we serve, and to help them to prepare to make ethical choices during their lifetime by achieving their full potential.

Who can be a Scout?

Any young man between the ages of 11 and 18 can become a Boy Scout.  For more information, feel free to visit us at one of our troop meetings at St. Sylvester, or send us an e-mail requesting information on how to join.

Not yet old enough for Boy Scouts but still want to join in the fun of Scouting?  How about as a Cub Scout?  For information, visit Cub Scout Pack 296's web site.

Parents - Troop 296 needs you too!

Every successful Boy Scout troop needs good leaders and interested parents.  You don't have to be an expert; we just need adults who care about our young people.  Troop 296's leaders rely upon volunteers such as yourself to help make our troop a success.  We need your assistance!
